Self Study: "Unlearning" Conditioned Ways

From my apartment last night. 4.24.11

Often times I remember that I can "unlearn" conditioned ways of thinking, behaving, and being. I have the power to change. It's not easy. It takes practice with diligence and a good heart. By tending to my ways of being, I can decide over and over again to do something new. I can think differently and behave as I'd like to rather than reacting to my conditioned ways that no longer serve me.

Just like practicing meditation by tending to my thoughts and returning to my one pointed focus again and again. Just like practicing asana and tending to my breath to maintain balance and ease while challenging myself in postures again and again. Just like practicing my full torso Yoga breath to be able to drop into it whenever I'd like again and again. I can tend to my conditioned ways and "unlearn" them by making another choice again and again simply by practicing.

Eventually, with cumulative practice, thoughts become easier to tend to in meditation.
Asana and breath awareness becomes possible and constant.
Breathing is something you can no longer ignore.
You have the power to change and become your best self.
Practice "unlearning" what no longer serves you.

Videos: Blasting thru Shit that No Longer Serves You

In classes we are working on Blasting thru Shit that No Longer Serves You. It may be a habit, something or someone you need to let go of, it may be tension or even fear, whatever it is that resonates with you that you'd like to release. I'll be gone this week visiting my folks in California so I wanted to leave you with a couple videos to keep your momentum going.

The first video is geared towards Chronic Conditions students and the second is geared towards All Levels students. Many of you are regulars in both classes and I encourage all of you to watch both videos, meet yourself where you are and begin to blast through with the practices/ options that are right for you!

Be sure to check out last week's post as well (Beautiful Day! Practices) for more offerings and options to add Yoga to your Day.

I have a few coaching tips when practicing with these videos. Let your breath be your barometer. Staying in postures is an awesome way to practice Blasting thru or Playing your Edge. Try to maintain a smooth steady breath as you stay strong in your postures. When you notice your breath becoming rushed or hurried- come out of the posture a bit until you can maintain that smooth steady breath again. If you are having no problem in said posture and could stay there for days- then go into the next stronger option and Blast thru that one! Go in and out at least 3-6 times to prepare your body to stay and Blast thru! Be sure you keep your shoulders away from the ears and do the same amount of reps and length of stays on each side.

You can think of the Chronic Conditions version as the video with the gentler options and the All Levels version as the one with the stronger options. Always honor your body and meet yourself where you are. Perhaps today you feel gentle is what you need but perhaps tomorrow you can rock the stronger versions. It's all practice, baby!

I will miss you all this week and will be thinking of you as I practice my Smiling Buddha Meditations. I look forward to returning to our regular class schedule as of Monday April 25th. In the meantime... Blast thru the Shit that No Longer Serves You and as always...

Rock your Practice!

It's a Beautiful Day! Practices

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood today! Take your practice outdoors! Here's a few practices you can to do take advantage of the sun and nourish your spirit at the same time.

Go for a walk. Here's a few walking practices for you to try:

Option 1- Be mindful of your breath. Don't try to change it necessarily but just be present with it as it is. As you continue walking you may notice it gets more rushed as you exert yourself more. At this point just try to make it smooth and steady, not longer, not more relaxed but meet yourself and your breath where you are and aim to create smooth steadiness and ease with your stride and your breath.

Option 2- Be mindful of your surroundings. Become aware of the sun on your skin, the birds chirping, the sounds around you, the sounds of your shoes hitting the pavement, the dirt or the track. Check out all that's newly blooming around you. What do you hear? What do you feel? What do you see? What do you smell? What do you taste? Try to use all of your senses to take it all in. Not trying to change things but to be present with what is right now.

Option 3- Counting meditation. Begin your walk and establish a walking speed that feels right for you. Notice your breath and make sure it's smooth and steady (not panting or pushing too hard). Begin timing your steps to your breath; as in: I am breathing in one (take a step, take a step). I am breathing out one (step, step). Or try this: inhale step, exhale step. This isn't a race but a practice in mindfulness of being present remember.

All options can be practiced seated as well. You can sit in the sun looking out a window. My favorite is to practice savasana in the sunlight on my living room floor. Getting as relaxed as I can and focusing on nothing but what is as my body melts into the warmth.

Our theme in all classes this week is Blasting thru the shit that no longer serves you. Bring this theme into your outdoor practice. As you inhale say silently to yourself - I breathe in light, (love, abundance, clarity, health, ease whatever you want to cultivate in your life) and as you exhale say silently to yourself- I release that which no longer serves me (or I blast through the shit that no longer serves me). You can do this walking, in asana, in meditation or  even lying down in the sunlight. Hell- even add some Warrior arms or Warrior postures every once in a while to get extra saucy!

Don't have time? Oh yes, you do! Walking from your work to your car (practice!), walking to the restroom (practice!), walking, standing, sitting you're already breathing- just shift your awareness to your breath and to what you are doing right then. Yoga on!!!

Get creative!
This is your Yoga Practice!
Rock it!
